Demystifying the secrets of grad school for current and future students!

Hi and welcome to Gradient - I’m Storm, a third year PhD candidate working in the field of Chemical Engineering!

I started this newsletter with the goal of demystifying the secrets of grad school through the lens of students, professors, faculty, and industry alike. For current grad students, Gradient aims to answer the questions that you may not feel comfortable asking your supervisor and give you the resources to make you a better researcher. For future students, Gradient will give you a look behind the curtain for what you can expect in a grad program and set you up for a successful start to your degree.

📚Newsletter Nomenclature

Like any good chemistry student, we should spend a bit of time talking about the nomenclature of the newsletter. This is our way of setting your expectations for what you will read in each post. We know that grad school can be incredibly busy, and you have to be selective with what you read, so this way you can quickly see if the post is relevant to you or not!

  1. What’s New

Episodes with this tag will give you an overview of what we are planning here at Gradient, including upcoming episodes and other exciting content that we are working on.

  2. Tips & Tricks

These episodes will focus on giving you advice from current graduate students and resources for a wide range of topics ranging from interview prep to writing a research paper, from studying habits for your comprehensives to time management strategies and many, many more.

  3. Grad Life

What do you actually do in grad school?” is a question that I am sure so many of us have heard before. Episodes with this tag will aim to clarify what the day-to-day is like for a grad student through stories from current grads and undergrad researchers.

  4. Ask a Pro

We are excited to share with you exclusive interviews with professors, post-docs, grad school alumni, and industry members across a variety of fields of study. Not only will they be able to share a unique perspective on grad school, but their shared experience could be an asset to help you with a career decision!
