Good Thursday morning --
Just a few updates today:
MUST READ FROM THE CENTRAL TEXAS PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSION ON PUBLIC SAFETY AND PROP Q
Neighborhood Network,
As Austinites prepare to head to the polls, Proposition Q has sparked many questions about its potential impact on our community’s finances. To help you stay informed, we’ve compiled key facts about Austin’s current tax landscape and the possible effects of the proposed measure.
Increasing Taxes for Residents
The average Austin homeowner’s property tax bill has increased 67% since 2015, with a 13% rise last year alone—about $1,000 more.
Texas ranked 7th in the nation for property tax rates in 2023, and Travis County had the highest median property tax bill in the state.
If Proposition Q passes, the average homeowner could pay about $300 more per year, while businesses would see $96 per $100,000 in property value added to their bill.
Budget
The City of Austin’s proposed FY26 budget was balanced with a 3.5% increase, but the Council-approved version added $388 million in new spending (+6.5%) and 100 new positions.
The approved budget also increased council and office allocations, including travel (up 55%) and food budgets (up 43%).
Rising Local Costs
Beyond property taxes, new fees and service rate increases will cost the typical ratepayer about $114 more per year.
Austin Energy implemented a 5% base rate increase this year and plans to continue 5% increases annually through 2030.
Austin Water raised rates by ~8% after a 15% increase last year.
For the first time in 20 years, Travis County saw negative net migration between July 2022 and July 2023, with more residents moving to nearby areas than moving in.
We encourage you to review this information, share it with your network, and make an informed decision when you vote.
