If you’ve ever worried that your age makes you “too late” to get published, I’m here to tell you—IT DOESN’T. Some of the biggest breakout debuts of the last few decades came from writers who published at 55, 60, 65, and beyond. (I had a lot of fun researching just who those writers are, which you will find in the list below.)
Truly, your writing life has no deadline. Some writers didn’t even feel the call to pick up a pen until after 40. I think in our society, in the US anyway, we are wayyy too obsessed with youth. We thrive on getting this done by a certain age or period in our lives. Or we want to be the youngest to have achieved something. (30 under 30!)
But I think that is just another hindrance to add to an already laborious writing life. This industry is unpredictable and complicated enough to then add more factors as to why something won’t work out, such as age. At the end of the day, we are all here to write a good story, right? And agents just want something they can feel connected to and see as something they can sell. Let’s go with that old cliché that says age is just a number. Because it is!
Below are five agents connected to writers who broke out later, reminding all of us that storytelling doesn’t come with an expiration date!
