Not everyone buys the hard problem. A vocal contingent of philosophers and neuroscientists argue that it's a confusion, a pseudo-problem born from flawed intuitions.

Daniel Dennett has been the most prominent critic. He argues that the hard problem trades on a "Cartesian theater" model of consciousness—the false idea that there's some place in the brain where "it all comes together," where experiences are presented to a central observer. The hard problem also touches on the deepest questions of meaning. If consciousness is fundamental to the universe, woven into its basic structure, then mind is not an afterthought, not an accident of evolution, but something central to reality. If consciousness is purely physical, an emergent property of sufficiently complex information processing, then we're part of a universe that could have existed without any experience at all—a cosmos of darkness.

Neither answer is comforting. Both are dizzying.
